Habitat For Humanity

Queens Build in Motion
“Will we ever see a Habitat for Humanity house being built in Queens” is a
common question amongst many people to-day. The answer is “Yes!” Finally,
after much work by the South Shore chapter members and Queens Build
Committee, finally started to work towards the June 2009 build in
Liverpool and hope to have it completed by August 2009.
How does Habitat for Humanity work?
Through volunteer labour, efficient management and tax-deductible donations
of money and materials, Habitat for Humanity builds and rehabilitates simple,
decent houses with the help of the homeowner (partner) families. Habitat for
Humanity houses are sold to partner families at no profit and financed with
affordable, no-interest mortgages. The homeowners' monthly mortgage
payments go into a revolving fund, which is used to build more houses.
Habitat for Humanity is not a give-away program. In addition to mortgage
payments, each homeowner invests hundreds of hours of their own labour,
called "sweat equity", into the building of their house and the houses of others.
Sponsors and volunteers are the lifeblood of Habitat for Humanity.
They cannot organize a build until they have enough funds and/or donated
building material to build a home - around $60,000. They need major sponsors to come on board and be part of the Habitat experience to
complete the build in 2009. Sponsorship is a wonderful way for Companies and Organizations on the South Shore to improve lives of a family in need.
Donors receive numerous public relations opportunities, including on-site
signage, recognition in Habitat's newsletters, annual report and website, on-site construction days for employees or members, and participation in Habitat's dedication ceremony.

How to Apply for a Habitat Home
Public information meetings have been held to inform prospective home
applicants about how to apply to become a Habitat home owner. It was already known that the need for decent low-cost housing was great on the South Shore.
Application forms will be made available at these meetings, however you may
also get them through the family selection chair - Ann Langille 354-7331.
Application forms can also be obtained at
www.habitatsouthshore.ca or email habitatqueensbuild@gmail.com.
